CMR Sata 14TB drive : Cant write partition table with Linux,GPT,gdisk

Cant write GPT partition table to this drive.
Anyone can help point out the problem ?
Also remember this is used in a hot swap rackserver where several other GPT drives work and not in a desktop pc cable job, where cabling can be an issue.

As you can see from the gdisk output below, I create a partition but it is clearly never written to partition table on disk. If I write, and start gdisk again there is no partition created.

Then I check if the partition was created.

and clearly it was not

The problem here is clearly that there is no way to create an MBR on this disk.
I tried by

  1. going into expert mode in gdisk,
  2. Create a new protected MBR ( n-option)
  3. Read the MBR that is in the memory and it is there. ( o-option)
  4. Write the MBR in memory to disk (w-option)

Then I quit and execute gdisk again.
It reports that MBR is not present.

So MBR is never written to disk.

Anyone know hot to fix this MBR issue ?

Have you tried fdisk ? If all the praise about gdisk is to be believed it’s superior, but fdisk has supported (and worked fine with) GPT for a long time by now.

fdisk never works on GPT. And I formatted several GPT disks in the past.

fdisk (newest version) cannot even find the disk.

gdisk finds the disk, show all sectors sizes and usable sectors. There is just an issue with writing the GPT MBR from memory to disk as my output in my original post shows.
So basically there is a problem with accessing Sector 0 in write mode.

I just returned it. cannot get it to format GPT.
I wonder if this could not be a motherboard chipset issue.
I used a H8DGU-F motherboard, but the specifications does not mention a disk size limit.
I have 8TB disk working that has no issue in the same server

I cannot seem to find if there is generally a maximum disk size limit for Sata I, II and III respectively for 64bit OS. Anyone know the disk size limits for the three sata specifications using 64bit OS ?
it has no problem with the 2TB limit associated with 32bit os and Sata I, as I have 64bit OS, and Sata II on the motherboard. But what limit comes after the 2TB limit for 64bit OS and sata II & III, I am not sure of.

Never heard of such limits. I’d imagine such limits would be widely known.
